Purpose & Objective of Position:
 
Black Duck Software (Canada) has a “Data Scientist Intern – Open Source Governance” position starting January. We are looking for graduate and undergraduate students who are innovative and excited about exploring the state of the art in Open Source Software (OSS) dealing with operating systems, programming languages, network protocols, security techniques, data management & analytics, and many others. OSS help companies and organizations by providing cost effective and innovative solutions for their business needs, be it cloud, social, mobile, IoT and others.
 
This position primarily requires an appetite to conduct research investigations on very large volumes sof data related to OSS. Candidate is expected to apply computational and statistical techniques to bring insights for our customers and partners so that they can consume OSS in a more secure and compliant way. The candidate needs good understanding about programming languages, databases, data mining, R, Hadoop, Spark and similar technologies.
 
We offer the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to explore solutions to real-life technical problems. The selected candidate will work with a dynamic, fast-paced Black Duck Research team that play a key role in building products and services that create value for our customers and partners. The selected candidate will have access to support from the world-class data scientists, domain experts, software developers and the user experience teams. Expectations:
  • Apply research to the real-world technical/business problems
  • Follow up on latest trends and share the knowledge among the team 
  • Develop and test software prototype(s) that showcase innovative concepts 
  • Participate in project meetings to support project goals, requirements, processes, deliverables, and timelines
     
Requirements:
  • BSc/MSc/PhD students in Computer Science or Mathematics or Statistics, or Engineering
  • Strong research, analytical, and software engineering skills
  • Self-motivated, keen to learn how things work and devise improvements
  • Excellent written, presentation and listening skills; good interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to full-time (typically 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, but we are work-flexible).  
Desired:
  • Familiarity with using computer programming languages such as Java, restEasy framework
  • Experience developing user interfaces with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and d3
  • Familiarity with using data analysis tools (e.g., Matlab, R, ManyEyes)
  • Familiarity with database technologies
